During this period, the number of religious books published reduced significantly, in part due to the inclination of religious teachers to write and publish articles instead. Issues raised in these works are more directed towards the lives of Muslims in the context of the plural Singapore society. Such issues include racial harmony and moderation in Islam. Apart from magazines and newspapers, religious teachers have also taken advantage of online platforms such as blogs and social media in sharing their thoughts.
(In this era, there are religious teachers working in the field of research in academic institutions and think tanks. They are trained in research and writing. These religious teachers are also amongst those who contribute tremendously to the local dakwah writings.)

Ustaz Syed Abdillah Ahmad Al-Jufri was a highly respected religious leader who was also a prolific writer. He translated books from Arabic to Malay, wrote religious articles and texts for Friday sermons as well as articles on topics which suited the needs of his students.
In the 1970s, he taught his first class of Tafsir Al-Quran (Qur’anic exegesis) at Madrasah Asriyah at Lorong Melayu. He had his class notes compiled and published into a book titled Pelita Al-Quran (Light of The Holy Quran). It consisted of four volumes, focusing on the chapters of Al-Baqarah, Ali-Imran, An-Nisa, Al-Maidah, Al-An’am, Al-A’raaf, and Juz Amma (Part 30 of The Qur’an). Additional content was added to make it a complete book to benefit the general reader. Ustaz Syed Abdillah was inspired to compile this book after working with and assisting Ustaz Ahmad Sonhadji Mohamed in his ‘Tafsir Qur’an Di Radio’ (Commentary of The Qur’an on-air) programme in the 1970s.
This book was written by Ustaz Ahmad Haris Suhaimi with the hope of motivating its readers to strive for continuous good deeds by carrying out simple acts of amal jariah (ceaseless charity). It discusses how small meaningful acts of charity can earn a person good deeds which will be multiplied as if he or she lives for thousands of years, and how it can earn him or her a high standing on the Day of Judgement. The writer also shares tips on ways to balance and incorporate daily deeds and supplications into one’s daily routine. This book is a comprehensive guide which calls its readers to maximize their time earning good deeds as a form of investment for the afterlife.

Ustaz Syed Ahmad Muhammad Semait was a respected figure known for his tireless work in the translation and publishing scene – namely with Pustaka Nasional. As an appreciation for Islamic knowledge that was spreading within the Malay Archipelago, Ustaz Syed Ahmad Semait started translating Arabic books with the aim of making the works of notable scholars readily accessible to the general public. In his lifetime, he translated and published more than 20 books on various subjects. These books remain valuable reference material today.
After writing and publishing for nearly 40 years, Ustaz Syed Ahmad Semait published the translation, commentary and analysis of the Sahih Bukhari – one of the major canonical collections of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w’s hadith. Titled Shahih Bukhari: Analisa dan Rumusan (Commentary on the Shahih Bukhari: Analysis and Summary) it was the first ever commentary of the Sahih Bukhari in Malay. Ustaz Syed Ahmad Semait’s efforts in this regard greatly benefitted the Malay Muslim community by providing them access to this remarkable compilation of Prophet Muhammad’s s.a.w. words. Unfortunately, Ustaz Syed Ahmad Semait passed away before he could complete translating all volumes from the Sahih Bukhari. Nonetheless, in the six volumes of his commentary and analysis, he managed to translate 2,026 hadith to the Malay language.

His book Seindah Solat Nabi (Beautify Our Solah as the Prophet’s Prayer) is a light reading version inspired by his master’s thesis in the field of Usuluddin (Hadith) at University of Malaya. Having worked in a mosque for about ten years, he presented anecdotes of his observations and experiences in the form of case studies and resolution of problems. In this book, he also explained prayers as performed by Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. and seeks to motivate readers to perform their prayers and supplications with mindfulness, as how the Prophet s.a.w would have done it.
Over two years, about 30 workshops and lectures were carried out based on the content of this book.
Prayer is the key to the acceptance of all our deeds. If our prayer is accepted, all our other deeds will be accepted and vice versa.
